The application process can begin at the beginning of August.

  • Complete your college application online, most often on www.commonapp.org
  • Be sure to check the required items checklist for each college you apply to.
  • If applying by The Common Application please include your counselor's email immediately under a college of choice (Recommenders/FERPA section).

Mark Smith - msmith@gasd-pa.org Last Names H-O

2.  Teacher recommendations are uploaded to the common application site. All GAHS e-mails are the teacher/counselor's first name, initial and last name followed by @gasd-pa.org. You can find these by searching in your school email account.

3. For applications submitted outside of the Common App - request a transcript anytime using the Transcript Request Form. This form is available on canvas, the transcript tab of our website and here.

4. Check your email for communication from the colleges you apply to. Many will ask for additional materials or ask you to set up a portal on their website where they will release your admission decision.

*If you receive an e-mail from a college stating they do not have a transcript, please email your counselor for assistance.

Q: When do college applications open for next school year?

A: Many college applications open August 1st of each year for students who plan to begin college classes during the following year’s fall semester. Make sure you are looking at the application deadline dates. Early Decision, Early Action, Regular Decision and Rolling Admission will have different deadlines and different admission decision dates.

Q: When are the application due dates?

A: These dates are different for each school; consult the school website. Typical timelines are as follows:

Early Decision I: Between October 15 and November 15 of your senior year.

Early Decision II: January all the way to March 1 of your senior year.

Early Action: Between October 15 and 15 of your senior year.

Regular Decision:  January 1 or 15 of your senior year, however it could range from November 30 to March 15.

Rolling Admission: Anytime between September 1 and May 1, though it is best to send in your application as early as possible — in September or October of senior year — as RA schools continue to accept students until they reach their enrollment capacity.

Q: What is differences between Early Decision and Early Action?

A: Early Decision (ED) and Early Action (EA) applications can be beneficial to students who have thought through their college options carefully and have a clear preference for one institution. Students need to make sure they understand the key distinction between the two plans. Early decision plans are binding.  A student who is accepted as an ED applicant must attend that college and withdraw all other college applications. Early action plans are non-binding. Students receive an early response to their application but do not have to commit to the college until the normal reply date of May 1. Approximately 450 colleges have early decision or early action plans, and some have both. Some colleges offer a non-binding option called single-choice early action, under which applicants may not apply ED or EA to any other college. If you are planning to apply Early Decision, please plan to meet with your counselor so you do not make any application mistakes.

Q: How do I apply to a college or university?

A: Each college may have a different application process. A convenient first step if you are applying to multiple colleges is to start a Common App application. If the college you are interested in does not use the Common App, or if you prefer, you can also apply on the college's website.
